Firmware Update Now Issued By HP
The firmware update, which is marked as optional in the release notes, can be installed onto the OfficeJet, OfficeJet Pro and OfficeJet Pro X suite of HP branded printers and is stated as removing ‘dynamic security’ measures which caused the printers to reject alternative branded ink cartridges.
The release notes further state that the firmware update “removes previous security firmware that may prevent the printer from working with certain ink supplies that contain non-HP security chips”. It also explains that “even with this change HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP supplies.”
Downloading And Installing The New Firmware Update
Anyone wishing to install the new update will first need to visit the HP website and locate the HP Driver page. Once landing on this page, users should then search for the printer unit they are wishing to apply the update to and once on the printer unit page of their choosing, they should then click on the ‘Firmware’ tab located at the bottom of the current page. From here, the newest firmware will be detailed in the pop-out tab and clicking the ‘Download’ button will take users to a download page.
Once the download has finished, the firmware update can then be installed directly onto the printer unit using one of three methods. The first of these methods is through using the Embedded Web Server (EWS), which can be used to update the firmware remotely on a network-connected HP printer which is in a ready and active state.
The second method is to install the software from a USB flash drive which contains the installation files. This should again only be used if the printer is able to be put into a ready state after booting up. If your printer is stuck in the ‘Error state’, the third method of installation is to also use a USB flash drive which contains the necessary files and use the ‘Preboot’ menu to update the software from the control panel menu displayed on the printer unit.
